Helping an Autistic Child Sleep

When my son, Brandon was a little guy around 2 or 3 years old, I could never get him to sleep at night. I would have to get up to go to work at about 5 in the morning having had only aboutg 3 hours of sleep because my son would bounce on his knees all night long trying to soothe himself.

After enrolling him in kintergarden, I discovered that he was light years behind his classmates developmentally. His teacher refered us to the Early Childhood Center where he was diagnised as autistic. When he was 6, we took Brandon to the Cardinal Glennon Developmental Center in St. Louis Mo. There he saw a doctor there who confirmed his diagnosis and told me to give Brandon 1mg or less of a vitamin called Melatonin every night to help him sleep. She said it would help him regulate his sleeping patterns again.

Although she never specified whether or not I should take him off of the vitamin, sometimes I give it to him and sometimes I don't have to. However, if he's up past 11 o'clock and still shows no signs of sleepiness, I give him the melatonin.

The doctor told me that melatonin is something that people create in their bodies anyway that signals the body when it's time to sleep. That's what makes us sleepy when it starts getting dark outside and why when it's light out side, we begin to get more awake. But in Autistic people, oftentimes the production of melatonin is off kilter for some reason and it's okay to suppliment it.

You can buy melatonin anywhere that you buy vitamins. I frequent Wal-mart and Walgreens a lot and usually buy them there but I'm sure they could be found at any health food store or even online. It's an inexpensive, chemical-free way to help your autistic child sleep at night and it's something I highly recommend.
